New Game Released; Colony!
by David Orr on Jul.30, 2009, under News
Hey everyone! Krin has just finished a brand new RTS game called Colony! You absolutely have to take a look at this game, it’s well worth it! I’ve had the pleasure of scoring an all-original soundtrack for it, which I’m really happy with. I’ll discuss that in one second. For now, let me tell you about the game. It takes place in the year 2273, on the first planet colonized by man. It features three governments you can play as (each government offers a different play style), and a host of buildings and units. The visuals are stunning- among the most polished I’ve seen in flash games to-date. Once you think you’ve mastered the game, you can put your skills to the test by battling against others using an online multiplayer server!
We took a different muscial approach than the Sonny games this time around. I incorperated more electronic and rock-styles in this soundtrack, to try and play homage (as the game does) to the Starcraft series. We decided to and create a more unique soundtrack- this time around, instead of a few loopable pieces, we created many smaller musical “slices”, that are assembled in any order during the game. Some slices are driving and blood-pumping, others are ambient and mood building. On top of that, each government has a unique theme that will play at certain times to help give each government a unique feel. I find that the music doesn’t get as old as quickly, and you can bet that we’ll be looking at this method to bring a more dynamic and ever-changing soundtrack to future games. This is very much a test run for future soundtracks, so we need to hear your input on how to improve it!
As always, you can head on over to Armorgames and play it, or you can click this link right here. We need your help to make this game a success!

The game is great — it really pushes the boundary of what can be done in a browser.
I do have a question though: you’ve posted in “a deeper look into my studio” that you’re using a Creative X-fi card.
The talk around the internet is that those cards suck. I’m looking into getting a card, but as I have zero knowledge, all this about audio interfaces and such is rather confusing. The Creative cards are meant more for gaming, and as such, should be easy to set up and use.
My question: how does your card work? Your setup is almost exactly like mine, and my parts (minus my onboard soundcard) are slightly better than yours. If you aren’t having any troubles with yours, then I’ll look into buying one.
Also, do you have any recomendations of other cards or at the very least do you know any good music forums that could help me out?
Thanks.

Hi David,
Sonny, Sonny 2 and this Colony have all been great games with great soundtracks!
I have a question tough — do you remember the name and composer of the piano-track used in the beginning cutscene of Sonny? I loved it, and it would be delighted to know what it is. (it was the cutscene where Louis found Sonny in the ship).

Hi David! I love your work in music! I’d have to say my favorite David Orr song is “The Final Encounter” for the Sonny and Sonny 2 Boss fights. I also love the Colony game! Especially the new units Krin made like the Saint, the A-27 Pride(Which isn’t that good to be honest.), and the Far Sniper(Outragous range).

Hey David. Just stopped by to say that all your music is fantastic. My favorite of all tracks is Heroic Confrontation. Keep up the good work.

Hi David,
I couldn’t find any contact information on this blog, so I’m leaving this comment in hopes that you’ll read it.
I absolutely love your nocturne in C# minor. I first heard it as the soundtrack to Copy Cat, and I’ve been listening to it on loop for the past three hours while I’ve been websurfing. It’s incredibly soothing.
Is there any way you’d be willing to send me the sheet music for it? I’m a piano player myself, and I’d be thrilled to play such a beautiful piece.
I understand if you’re worried about copyright stuff. I promise I won’t plagiarize it or something; I just want to play it on the piano. Of course, you can’t trust anyone on the internet, so again, I understand if you’re uncomfortable with that.
If you do decide you’re willing to send me the sheet music, can you send it to the e-mail attached to this comment? I can handle either a pdf or a sibelius file, though I’d prefer the pdf.
Thank you very much, and keep up the good work!

Hey im a big fan of colony and I saw that it only had one website that had the game.(armorgames) This website called kongregate is a perfect place for the game. Its a great way to spread the word about the game and yourself. If you could tell Krin to put it on kongregate.com you would get credit for your songs. Get back to me when you can.

Hey Trevor,
The game may be put on more sites at some point (just like Sonny and Sonny 2 were), but I’m not sure. Armor games is the sponsor of it, and they decide where it will be released.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Well David kongregate has a music section on the website. If you can download your songs on there you can win some cash if they get some great rates. (I know ill rate 4 stars)

Call your insurance agent to see what changes to expect in your policies for changing states. Ask if moving is covered and arrange for insurance for your new home.

Moving is a perfect time to eliminate these extra junk that we’ce accumulated over the years. We’ll be donating a lot to Goodwill and hopefully get a decent tax deduction for 2010.
