Website Redesign!
by David Orr on Jan.03, 2010, under News
I’ve been contemplating a fresh layout for the site for a while now, and I’ve finally decided to do it. The previous layout was approaching 4 years old, and I think a change of layout corresponds well to the change of decade (happy 2010!)
Along with the redesign, I’m busily working on an online store where you can purchase exclusive Mp3’s, including the full version of Four Brave Champions (Castle Crashers Theme) and Heroic Confrontation (Sonny). Plans for commercial licensing are also on the table. Stay tuned!

sweet! oh, and is there any chance you’ll put the full version of the sounds of gaia on your site?
January 4th, 2010 on 1:13 am
Thanks! I don’t have the piece on my site for download, but I put it on Newgrounds several years back. You can find it here. Enjoy!

January 4th, 2010 on 9:03 pm
Unfortunately I haven’t released that for download, but it may be put up sometime in the future.

Love the designs, Dave. You know, I was wondering if I could do a short interview on you. I’m doing a report for my music class on who my favorite artist is.

Sure, i’d be happy the answer any questions you have!

Hello David, my real name is Caleb Graves, I been listening to your songs for about a year now. The 1st songs I heard was on the Game “D’sora Rpg” (by the way I love the music on there, you did a wonderful job). I love to talk with you on Facebook, just look up my name! And your fans are right, you are a great composer just like those working on Final Fantasy!
My website has free membership!

Hello, Mr. Orr, My name is Sammy. Ever since I listened to your Nocturne in C# minor, I was inspired to go back to piano. Anyway, I was wondering whether you had the sheet music for it, and if you did, could you publish it, or at least let the public have access to it? My brothers, who are not the world’s biggest piano fans, love this song and I want to be able to play it for them. Thanks for consideration.

What was it like growing up in New Hampshire for you?
January 7th, 2010 on 5:49 pm
Caleb, I think a live chat room would be a really fun idea- I could put it right on the side bar of the page under the MP3 player!
Brant, I find that New Hampshire has a great combination of a lot of different characteristics of America. Northern New Hampshire is quite rural, and offers a taste of the American country life. The White Mountains offer some great hikes and views. I grew up in Amherst, which is a small town in southern New Hampshire (a 20 minute drive freom Manchester NH, and about an hour from Boston, MA). Southern New Hampshire is more built up, and feels more like Massachusetts (somewhat of a “lite” version).
It’s great having Boston just an hour away. There are some really nice music schools there (New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, Berklee College, among dozens of university music programs). I had the privilege of studying at the New England Conservatory Prep School for a few years in high school, which was a wonderful experience.
That about sums it up. New England is a great place to be, especially in the fall. All of those calendar pictures of New England with the vividly colored leaves are very true- it can be an absolutely gorgeous place to be!
January 7th, 2010 on 6:47 pm
Sounds like you have quite the location for a lifestyle. Next question: When did you first start going to musicians’ schools?
January 7th, 2010 on 7:56 pm
Caleb- added the live chat.
Brant, I started taking private piano and theory lessons when I was 7 at a local music school in Manchester. I started studying with a new private piano teacher at the New England Conservatory (NEC) Prep school at 15, and when I was 16 enrolled to take more classes at the school. Those classes were held on Saturdays- they were in addition to my public schooling here in Amherst. Most of my music on the site and on Newgrounds is outside of my academic life. Academically I’ve been writing more “classical” music than the things you see here. Ive written several chamber pieces (a few string quartets, piano quintets, etc.), and I just finished the first movement to my first symphony, which I hope to get on my site when the whole thing is finished. In addition I’ve written a bunch for the piano, including some etudes, nocturnes, and a sonata. A little bit of everything, I suppose!
I think proper training and schooling is extremely important, but it’s not the end-all-be-all. Creativity and motivation are difficult things to teach, but are crucial to writing compelling scores. The most potent combination (in my opinion of course) is a mixture of experience, motivation, all on top of a solid academic foundation.
Guess I got a bit side tracked there, but I think that answers your question!

Hello, Mr. Orr, My name is Sammy. Ever since I listened to your Nocturne in C# minor and your Sonata in G minor, I was inspired to go back to piano. Anyway, I was wondering whether you had the sheet music for it, and if you did, could you publish it, or at least let the public have access to it? My brothers, who are not the world’s biggest piano fans, love this song and I want to be able to play it for them. Thanks for consideration.
January 7th, 2010 on 9:12 pm
Hey Sammy, I thought I had replied already- sorry about that! Ive had quite a few requests for the music recently, but unfortunately I can’t seem to find it. I do have it notated out, but I don’t have it on my current computer, so I’ve been going through old archives in hopes of finding it. I’ll be sure to make a special post when I’ve found the music so it can be easy to find. Sorry to make you wait!
January 7th, 2010 on 9:19 pm
It’s okay. Thank you, Mr. Orr.
January 8th, 2010 on 4:52 pm
Yes, indeed it does. Now, was there ever a point in your career where you began feeling discouraged?
January 9th, 2010 on 12:42 pm
There haven’t been many times where I feel truly discouraged. Sometimes I feel frustration when (for instance) I have a difficult time scoring the music I hear in my head, or when I cant make a particular piece sound how I want it to sound. I usually turn that frustration into motivation before it becomes discouragement, however, which is something I’m really glad I can do. It can be easy to admit defeat when you are set back, but I believe those are the times we can grow most.

Hmm, that is exactly what keeps a musician going, you are right. Hmm……. trying to think of what else there is…. have you ever considered attempting to find a vocalist for some of your future songs?
January 10th, 2010 on 2:21 pm
Absolutely! I don’t want to get into specifics, but that is definitely something I want to do. There is a possibility that I will be hiring a vocalist for my next soundtrack with Krin, but again, that’s all very much in the air at this point. That said, I have a couple of people in mind that I’d love to work with, and will be working hard to get them on board!
January 10th, 2010 on 3:18 pm
Well, if someone else ends up reading this interview, they might actually add on saying, “DO IT, DAVID! DO IT DAVID!” XD. Well, I figure that’s all the questions I have for you, David. Thank you for your time and I wish you luck on your future sound tracks, concertos, sonatas, orchestras, and any other musical pieces you work with.

Have you ever considered adding more videos to your blog posts to keep the readers more entertained? I mean I just read through the entire article of yours and it was quite good but since I’m more of a visual learner
January 27th, 2010 on 1:14 pm
I’ve been toying with the idea- make a video series of how I go about writing my music. I think it’d be an awesome way to attract more listeners! Thanks for the suggestion!
January 29th, 2010 on 2:06 am
are you connected with them?
